For thousands of years, fishermen have been using cast nets with various modifications. This simple device, a circular net with small weights distributed around its edge, is particularly effective for catching small “forage fish” which are then used for bait.
The fishing net spreads out while it’s in the air before it sinks into the water. A 30′ handline is attached to the net which is held in one hand as the net is thrown. When the net is full, a retrieval clamp, which works like a wringer on a mop, closes the net around the fish. Pulling the handline retrieves the net.
Cast nets work best in water that is no deeper than their radius and free of obstructions. Reeds can cause tangles and branches can rip nets.
When throwing the net out into the water, use both hands, moving your arms and body in a circular motion. Fishermen can cast the net from a boat, from the shore, or while wading.
